「大慈大悲」是佛教对慈悲精神的最高表达。「慈」是给予众生快乐（与乐），「悲」是拔除众生的痛苦（拔苦）。「大」则表示这种慈悲是无分别的、无条件的、遍一切众生的。大慈大悲是观音菩萨的核心特质——「大慈大悲救苦救难观世音菩萨」是中国人最熟悉的佛号之一。佛教认为，慈悲不是情绪化的怜悯，而是基于智慧的平等关怀。
'Great compassion and great mercy' is Buddhism's highest expression of compassion. 'Ci' (mercy) gives beings joy; 'bei' (compassion) relieves their suffering. 'Great' means this compassion is unconditional, non-discriminating, and universal. This is the core quality of Avalokitesvara (Guanyin) Bodhisattva.
