📖 释义 Annotation
「普度众生」是大乘佛教菩萨道的核心精神。「普」是普遍、无差别，「度」是从此岸到彼岸（度化），「众生」是一切有情生命。菩萨发愿不仅要自己觉悟，还要帮助一切众生都脱离苦海。这是大乘佛教与小乘佛教最根本的区别——小乘追求个人解脱（阿罗汉），大乘追求众生共同解脱（菩萨、佛）。四大菩萨（观音、文殊、普贤、地藏）都是「普度众生」的典范。
'Universally save all sentient beings' is the core spirit of Mahayana Bodhisattva practice. 'Pu' means universal and non-discriminating; 'du' means crossing over (to liberation). A bodhisattva vows not only to achieve personal enlightenment but to help ALL beings cross beyond suffering.
