— Zen sudden enlightenment
Annotation
'Become a Buddha on the spot' paired with 'put down the butcher's knife' expresses Zen's core sudden enlightenment doctrine. 'On the spot' means immediately — no need for countless kalpas of practice; a single moment of awakening, and you are Buddha. The Sixth Patriarch said: 'The previous thought confused is an ordinary person; the next thought awakened is Buddha.'
