「尘垢秕糠」原指尘土、污垢、秕谷和米糠,比喻微不足道的废弃之物。语出《逍遥游》中对藐姑射山神人的描述:神人肌肤如冰雪,绰约如处子,不食五谷,吸风饮露。她的尘垢秕糠——身上脱落的微末之物——尚且可以陶铸出尧舜那样的圣君。

庄子以这个极度夸张的意象表达了至高之道的无穷力量。神人本体如此高远超绝,连她微不足道的尘渣都具有造就圣人的能力。这是庄子独特的浪漫主义表达手法,以荒诞般的夸张来传递不可言说的道之伟大。

"Chen gou bi kang" originally refers to dust, grime, chaff, and husks — metaphorically, trivial and discarded things. It comes from the description of the divine being on Mount Miaogushe in "Free and Easy Wandering": her skin is like ice and snow, graceful as a maiden, she does not eat grains but sips the wind and drinks the dew. Her "dust and chaff" — the merest particles shed from her body — could still mold sages like Yao and Shun.

Zhuangzi uses this extravagant image to convey the boundless power of the supreme Dao. The divine being herself is so transcendently lofty that even her insignificant residue can create sage-kings. This is Zhuangzi's unique romantic literary technique — using seemingly absurd hyperbole to communicate the inexpressible greatness of the Dao.

On a deeper level, "dust and chaff" also implies that worldly treasures like power and rank are mere trivial by-products on the scale of the Dao. Though the governance of Yao and Shun is admired by all, in the eyes of one who has attained the Way, it is merely a derivative of the merest particles.
