原文Original Text
Zhuangzi, Free and Easy Wandering

释义Annotation

"Xiao yao zi zai" represents the supreme spiritual ideal in Zhuangzi's philosophy and encapsulates the central theme of the opening chapter, "Free and Easy Wandering." "Xiao yao" means to roam without constraint; "zi zai" describes an inner state unshackled by external things. Together, they express the ultimate spiritual liberation — free from the bonds of fame and fortune, unburdened by worldly cares, wandering through heaven and earth without attachment.

The "Free and Easy Wandering" opens with the magnificent flight of the great Peng bird: In the Northern Sea there is a fish called Kun, which transforms into a bird called Peng, whose wings are like clouds hanging from the sky, rising ninety thousand li on a whirlwind. Yet Zhuangzi points out that even the Peng depends on the great winds of June to soar — it is not yet truly free. True freedom is to "ride the truth of heaven and earth, master the changes of the six vital breaths, and wander through the infinite" — to become one with the cosmos, flowing with nature's transformations, roaming an endless spiritual expanse.

Through a series of contrasts — the Peng and the sparrow, the morning mushroom and the ancient tree, small knowledge and great knowledge — Zhuangzi progressively reveals that people are unfree because they are limited by their own horizons and attachments. The perfected person has no self, the spirit person has no merit, the sage has no name — only by relinquishing ego, achievement, and reputation can one attain the highest state of carefree transcendence.

Modern Application

In contemporary life, the wisdom of "xiao yao zi zai" offers a spiritual path beyond material anxiety and social comparison. Modern people are often ensnared by systems of efficiency, success metrics, and social media validation, rarely finding inner peace. Zhuangzi's ideal of freedom reminds us: true liberation lies not in how much we possess, but in how much we can let go. When we stop measuring our worth by others' standards, inner freedom arrives naturally.

Contemporary movements like minimalism, mindfulness meditation, and digital detox all echo Zhuangzi's spirit of carefree ease. This is not passive withdrawal from the world, but rather finding one's own inner space and rhythm amid complexity — living a life that is authentically one's own.
