Original Text

— Analects, Yan Yuan

Annotation

'Restrain the self and return to propriety' — Yan Yuan asked about benevolence. Confucius answered: restrain yourself, return to propriety, and this is benevolence. 'Keji' is self-restraint; 'fuli' is returning to norms. This is the basic practice of Confucian self-cultivation.
