Original Text

— Analects, Yong Ye

Annotation

'Refined and balanced' — 'zhi' (substance) exceeds 'wen' (refinement) and one appears crude; 'wen' exceeds 'zhi' and one appears superficial. Only when both are balanced does one become a gentleman. This is the mean applied to personal character.

Modern Application

Inner cultivation and outer expression are equally important. 'Refined and balanced' reminds us: substance without expression is a regret; expression without substance is pretense. Both together is perfection.
