「不争之德」是老子对最高行为准则的概括。善于做将帅的人不逞勇武，善于作战的人不轻易发怒，善于克敌的人不与敌正面交锋。「不争」并非消极退缩，而是一种更高明的策略——以退为进、以柔克刚。
"The virtue of non-contention" — a good leader is not aggressive, a good fighter is not easily angered. "Non-contention" is not passive retreat but a higher strategy — advancing through yielding and overcoming through softness.
