「抱一为天下式」是老子对修行者的核心教导。「一」即道，「抱一」就是持守大道、不离根本。「一」在道家哲学中具有特殊地位：它是道的数字表达，是万物未分之前的浑然整体。在纷繁复杂的世界中保持内心的统一与宁静，这便是圣人的修养。
"Hold to the One as the model of the world" — "the One" is the Tao; holding to it means keeping to the great Way. "The One" is the Tao's numerical expression, the undifferentiated wholeness before all things divided. Maintaining inner unity amid complexity — this is the sage's cultivation.
