Chapter 28
Valley

Know the Masculine

Know the masculine, hold to the feminine - be the world's stream. Being the world's stream, constant virtue does not depart, and you return to the state of infancy. Know the white, hold to the dark - be the world's model. Being the world's model, constant virtue does not err, and you return to the infinite.

'Know the masculine, hold to the feminine - be the world's stream.'
You must understand assertiveness (masculine) but practice receptivity (feminine). The stream flows low and receives all tributaries - this is the path of virtue. Understanding without practice is empty; practice without understanding is blind.
'Know the white, hold to the dark - be the world's model.'
Understand clarity (white) but dwell in mystery (dark). Those who understand both sides become models for others - they have navigated the full spectrum.
'Know the honored, hold to the humble - be the world's valley.'
Understand prestige but practice humility. The valley is the lowest point - all water flows to it. Humility is the position of greatest accumulation.
'When uncarved wood is cut up, it becomes tools. The greatest cutting does not sever.'
The uncarved wood represents original wholeness. When it's cut, it becomes specialized tools - useful but limited. The sage uses tools without losing the wholeness. 'The greatest cutting does not sever' means the deepest transformation preserves the original nature.
This is about gender roles.
'Masculine' and 'feminine' are metaphors for active and receptive qualities. All humans have both. Laozi advocates balance, not gender stereotypes.
'Holding to the feminine' means being weak.
The stream is the most powerful force in nature - it carves canyons. Holding to the feminine is strategic power, not weakness.
💡 Balanced Leadership
A leader must understand assertiveness (know the masculine) but practice listening (hold to the feminine). The best leaders are those who can do both.
🏢 Strategic Positioning
In business, 'being the valley' means occupying the lowest position - being accessible, affordable, and indispensable. Amazon's 'Day 1' philosophy is the valley.
📚 Personal Development
Know your strengths (white) but embrace your shadows (dark). Integration of opposites is the path to wholeness - the return to 'uncarved wood.'
Wang Bi 王弼 (226–249 CE)
'The sage knows the extremes but holds the middle. He understands the full spectrum but dwells in the essential.'
Interprets as holding the center between opposites.
Heshang Gong 河上公 (Han dynasty)
'Know the masculine means understanding the world. Hold to the feminine means preserving oneself.'
Practical balance: engage the world while protecting your core.
Chen Guying 陈鼓应 (b. 1935)
'Laozi's masculine/feminine framework is not about biology but about modes of being. The sage integrates both.'
Modern reading: integration of complementary qualities.
