🏮 Cultural Background

Fortune sticks (求签, qiú qiān) are one of the oldest and most widespread forms of Chinese folk divination, practiced in temples across China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Chinese diaspora communities worldwide. The tradition dates back at least to the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE) and remains vibrant today — millions of people visit temples each Lunar New Year to draw their annual fortune.

The practice typically involves 100 numbered bamboo sticks, each corresponding to a specific poem and fortune level. The devotee stands before the temple altar, burns incense, states their name and question, then shakes a bamboo cylinder (签筒, qiān tǒng) until one stick rises above the rest. This stick is then matched to the corresponding poem on the temple wall.

The fortune levels follow a traditional grading system: 上上 (Supreme), 上吉 (Great Fortune), 中吉 (Middle Fortune), 中平 (Neutral), 下吉 (Small Fortune), 下下 (Lowest). This system reflects the Chinese philosophical concept that fortune and misfortune are intertwined — a principle also central to BaZi destiny analysis — as the Dao De Jing teaches, "Misfortune is what fortune leans upon; fortune is where misfortune hides." Many practitioners also check their dream symbols alongside daily signs for a more complete picture.

Today, online fortune sticks have become a popular way to engage with this tradition, especially among younger generations. While the medium has changed, the practice of pausing, reflecting, and seeking guidance remains at the heart of the experience.
