— Heart Sutra (Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya)
Annotation
'Form is emptiness' is the core thesis of the Heart Sutra and the essence of Mahayana emptiness. 'Form' (rupa) refers to all material phenomena; 'emptiness' (sunyata) means all things lack inherent, unchanging essence. Form and emptiness are not opposites — the nature of form IS emptiness, and emptiness manifests AS form. This is not nihilism but a revelation of the phenomenal world: all things arise through dependent origination.
Modern Application
Attachment to material things and appearances is the root of suffering. When we understand that all things change and nothing is permanent, we can enjoy the present more freely. Letting go is not giving up on life but living with greater clarity.
