— Heart Sutra
Annotation
'The five aggregates are all empty' opens the Heart Sutra. The five aggregates — form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness — constitute a person. Avalokitesvara, practicing deep prajna, saw that all five are empty and thereby transcended all suffering. This does not mean we don't exist, but that none of the components of 'self' have independent, eternal essence.
Modern Application
We are often troubled by emotions, thoughts, and identity. 'The five aggregates are empty' reminds us: these are not the essence of 'self.' Observing our thoughts without attachment is the modern practice of 'seeing that the five aggregates are empty.'
