— Analects, Tai Bo
Annotation
'The burden is heavy and the road is long' — spoken by Zengzi. Taking 'benevolence' as one's responsibility — is that not heavy? Continuing until death — is that not far? This is Confucianism's ultimate demand on intellectuals: not for personal gain, but for all under heaven.
Modern Application
Choosing to do what is right is harder than choosing what is easy. 'Heavy burden, long road' reminds us: truly valuable endeavors are never easy.
