「不立文字」是禅宗的四大纲领之一。禅宗认为，佛法的真谛超越语言文字的范畴——文字是指月之指，不是月亮本身。执着于文字就像只看手指而忘了月亮。但这并不意味着否定一切文字——禅宗留下了大量的公案、语录和诗偈。「不立文字」的真正意思是：不要被文字所束缚，要超越文字去直接体验真理。
'Not established on words and letters' is one of Zen's four great principles. Zen holds that the truth of dharma transcends language — words are fingers pointing at the moon, not the moon itself. The true meaning: do not be bound by words; transcend them to directly experience truth.
