Original Text

— Sutra on Mahabrahma's Questions to the Buddha

Annotation

'Holding up a flower and smiling' is Zen's most famous dharma-transmission story. At Vulture Peak, Sakyamuni Buddha held up a flower before the assembly. All were silent, but Mahakasyapa broke into a smile. The Buddha then transmitted the 'treasury of the true dharma eye' to him.
