「返璞归真」是道家和佛家共通的核心理念。「璞」是未经雕琢的原石，「真」是本真、本性。去掉后天的装饰和伪装，回归本来的纯真——道家称之为「复归于朴」，佛家称之为「见本性」。在禅宗中，返璞归真的修行就是「本来无一物，何处惹尘埃」——本性本来清净，不需要添加什么，只需要去掉多余的。
'Return to simplicity and truth' is a shared Taoist-Buddhist ideal. 'Pu' is uncarved stone; 'zhen' is original nature. Removing artificial decoration and returning to original purity — Taoism calls this 'returning to the uncarved block,' Buddhism calls it 'seeing one's original nature.' In Zen, the original nature is already pure; one need not add anything, only remove what is excessive.
