— Zen Buddhism
Annotation
'Not a single thread attached' in Zen originally described a mind free from all worldly attachments. 'Thread' metaphorizes afflictions; 'attached' means being bound — the practitioner's mind achieves complete freedom. The original meaning (spiritual freedom) is entirely different from the modern usage — a classic case of semantic shift.
Modern Application
Freedom of mind matters more than freedom of body. 'Not a single thread attached' reminds us: true liberation is inner — when you are no longer attached to anything external, you achieve the greatest freedom.
