「醍醐灌顶」源自《涅槃经》中以牛乳提炼过程比喻修行次第的经文。从牛乳到醍醐，经过五重提炼，醍醐是最精纯的精华。灌顶原是印度国王登基时以水灌顶的仪式，密宗借用为传法仪式。后世将「醍醐灌顶」引申为听了高明的见解后豁然开朗的感觉。
