「衣钵相传」源自禅宗独特的传法制度。禅宗初祖达摩传法给二祖慧可时，以袈裟和钵盂作为传法的信物——「衣」代表佛法的传承，「钵」代表修行人的本分。此后代代相传，直到六祖慧能。慧能之后，袈裟不再传，改为以心印心。「衣钵相传」后来引申为一切技艺、学问、事业的师徒传承。
'Transmitting robe and bowl' originates from Zen's unique dharma transmission system. When First Patriarch Bodhidharma transmitted dharma to Huike, he used robe and bowl as tokens — the robe representing dharma transmission, the bowl representing a practitioner's duty. After the Sixth Patriarch, physical transmission ceased; mind-to-mind transmission continued.
