Dāng rén bù ràng
When it comes to benevolence, do not yield

Original Text

— Analects, Wei Ling Gong

Annotation

'When it comes to benevolence, do not yield — even to your teacher.' Benevolence is the highest principle, transcending all relationships. Confucius taught humility, but in matters of 'benevolence,' yielding is retreat. Some responsibilities cannot be shirked.

Modern Application

When facing what is right, don't retreat for fear of offending. 'When it comes to benevolence, do not yield' — in matters of justice, yielding is retreat.
